Walking the walk

..or, biking the bike. Continuing his discussion of neoconservatives driving fuel-saving cars , Andrew Sullivan posts an email from a person familiar with oil markets. Basically-- and maybe for this decade only-- US continues to have a huge influence on oil prices, so that a little bit of conservation (they're talking 10%. I have no idea how realistic this is) can really push the prices down.

The emailer connects the dots: the "oiligarchies" making money off our consumption are the same illiberal sources of terror. Whatever your ideas of root causes, our money is being used to put off or buy off reforms.

Sullivan thinks that there are big numbers doing this; my instincts are actually that left, right, and center, Americans like their autos. However, the link between consumption and national security is worth considering. I also think the initiative to conserve will have to come from the right. People still remember Jimmy Carter in a sweater.
